July 1, 2026Fifteen years ago, we walked into the tattoo industry as outsiders.
Our founder, Paul-Anthony Surdi, came from music and film, two industries that taught him the same lesson over and over: talented people keep getting locked out of opportunities that should be theirs. Not because they lack skill. Because they lack access.
The tattoo industry was no different. Aspiring Tattoo Artists were being turned away for not knowing the right people. Others were stuck in unstructured situations with no clear milestones and no real path forward. The craft was thriving. The opportunity to actually learn it? Not so much.
So we decided to build something different. A structured tattoo apprenticeship built around real mentorship, professional training, and the straightforward belief that anyone willing to do the work deserves a shot at this career. That idea became Ink Different Tattoos. And fifteen years later, we're still building on it.
When we started, the traditional tattoo world wasn't rolling out the welcome mat.
The idea that a tattoo apprenticeship could be structured, accessible, and career-driven rather than informal and gatekept didn't sit well with a lot of people. We were written off. Pushed back against. Told repeatedly that this wasn't how things were done.
We kept going anyway.
The early years were about proving the model worked. Every tattoo apprentice who completed their tattoo apprenticeship with us and went on to build a long-lasting, professional career was proof that it did. And over time, that proof became impossible to ignore.
Nothing tested us like 2020.
Every single location shut its doors. For a company built around hands-on, in-studio training, that was about as serious a challenge as it gets. But the team held. The Mentors held. And the mission held.
Coming through that period confirmed something we already believed: when the work you're doing actually matters, you find a way to keep doing it. We did.
Today, Ink Different Tattoos looks a lot different than it did when we started. Here's what fifteen years of staying the course has built.
We've grown from 27 to 48 studio locations across the country, including Spanish-speaking studios in Miami, New York City, Denver, Orange County, Naples, Oklahoma City, and San Diego. Every new location means more access for Tattoo Artists who otherwise wouldn't have it.
Our Master Mentorship Program now includes 17 celebrity and world-renowned Tattoo Artists actively training working Tattoo Artists. These are celebrity Tattoo Artists whose work you already know. They're here because they believe in what this model stands for.
We're currently producing a documentary featuring tattoo legend Gill Montie. More details are coming soon, but it's one worth watching for.
