Meet Your Mentor
Gabe Motta
Leading your North Hollywood Tattoo Apprenticeship is Gabe Motta, a Tattoo Artist with over a decade of experience across two continents, whose story starts in Brazil and lands right here in Los Angeles, at Thirty One Tattoo.
Gabe has been an artist his entire life, drawing before he could do much else and tattooing since the age of seventeen. That's over a decade behind the needle, shaped by a creative practice that never stands still and a style that keeps getting deeper. Born in Brazil and now calling Los Angeles home, he brings an international artistic perspective that you simply don't find in most Mentors. He travels for conventions throughout the year and takes guest spots in San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro, and across Europe, which means when Gabe teaches, he's teaching from a career built on the highest creative stages the industry has.
His style is rooted in tradition and refined by a restless curiosity. Gabe draws from American traditional and Japanese traditional tattooing, layered with the decorative elegance of Art Nouveau ornament and the pulse of contemporary art. He creates work that is unmistakably his own: bold lines, striking color, fauna, flora, and ornament designed not just to look stunning in a photo, but to move naturally with the body they're on. That last part matters. It's the difference between a tattoo that looks great on day one and a tattoo that looks great for decades.
What You'll Learn With Gabe
Gabe Motta started drawing before he could do much else. He started tattooing at seventeen. He's spent over a decade building a body of work across two continents and countless conventions. When he mentors, every bit of that journey comes with him.
Under Gabe, you'll develop:
- Technical mastery in bold linework and color, the foundation of every style Gabe works in.
- An understanding of traditional tattooing rooted in American and Japanese influences, built to last.
- The decorative instinct of Art Nouveau: how to create ornamental work that feels both lush and structured.
- Compositional thinking that goes beyond the page: how to design for the body, not just on it.
- A creative curiosity and artistic range shaped by an internationally traveling, convention-circuit career.
North Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley are part of one of the world's most dynamic creative ecosystems. And Thirty One Tattoo is one of its finest studios. If you're ready to learn from an artist who has been doing this since he was seventeen and shows no signs of slowing down, this is where your career begins.
