Here’s how to stay compliant and confident every step of the way.
Research Your State and Local LawsÂ
Every state has its own licensing process, and in many places, local health departments have additional rules. Before starting your tattoo apprenticeship, check both your state and county health department websites. That way, you understand precisely what certifications, permits, or inspections are required.
Obtain Required Certifications
Most states require Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) training, and some also mandate CPR or first-aid certification. These aren’t just legal boxes to check but skills that protect you and your clients from infection and help you handle emergencies safely. Completing these certifications early shows you’re serious about your craft.
Apply for Licensing Once Training Is Complete
When you’ve finished your tattoo apprenticeship and earned your certifications, it’s time to apply for your tattoo license. Most applications require proof of training, copies of your certifications, a health screening, and sometimes an inspection of your workspace. Keeping your paperwork organized will make the process much smoother.
Maintain Client Consent Records and Hygiene Standards
Always have clients complete a consent form and verify their ID before tattooing. Keep these records securely for the time required by your state, typically two to five years. Combine that with consistent disinfection practices, single-use needles, and properly labeled biohazard disposal to maintain compliance and client trust.
Keep Your Workspace Inspection-ReadyÂ
Health inspectors may visit without notice, so keep your tattoo studio inspection-ready at all times. This preparation means clean surfaces, sealed and dated sterilization pouches, and visible handwashing stations. A spotless tattoo studio isn’t just compliant; it also shows professionalism and pride in your work.
