Meet Your Mentor

What You'll Learn With Gabe

Gabe Motta started drawing before he could do much else. He started tattooing at seventeen. He's spent over a decade building a body of work across two continents and countless conventions. When he mentors, every bit of that journey comes with him.

Under Gabe, you'll develop:

  • Technical mastery in bold linework and color, the foundation of every style Gabe works in.
  • An understanding of traditional tattooing rooted in American and Japanese influences, built to last.
  • The decorative instinct of Art Nouveau: how to create ornamental work that feels both lush and structured.
  • Compositional thinking that goes beyond the page: how to design for the body, not just on it.
  • A creative curiosity and artistic range shaped by an internationally traveling, convention-circuit career.

North Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley are part of one of the world's most dynamic creative ecosystems. And Thirty One Tattoo is one of its finest studios. If you're ready to learn from an artist who has been doing this since he was seventeen and shows no signs of slowing down, this is where your career begins.

What Is a Day Like

for a North Hollywood Tattoo Apprentice?

Being a tattoo apprentice in North Hollywood means joining an artistic community shaped by actors, musicians, designers, and artists of every kind. Your day might start with a stop at Republic of Pie, a beloved NoHo café, for a strong cup of coffee and a slice of homemade pie before heading to the tattoo studio. Once inside, you’ll set up your station and make sure everything is properly sanitized and ready for the day ahead. The morning could involve observing a mentor’s consultation, sketching designs, or refining your linework and shading techniques on synthetic skin.

As the day picks up, you’ll gain hands-on experience assisting artists, prepping equipment, and eventually working on clients under the supervision of your mentor. At lunch, you might grab a wood-fired pizza at Pitfire Pizza on Lankershim Boulevard to refuel before the afternoon rush.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll learn:

  • Tattoo design and placement
  • Proper sterilization and hygiene practices
  • Building a professional tattoo portfolio
  • Navigating the business side of tattooing, including branding and client communication

After a long day at the studio, you might wind down with a show at the historic El Portal Theatre or catch up with fellow artists over drinks at Idle Hour, a one-of-a-kind bar built inside a giant whiskey barrel with a laid-back patio vibe. Each day as an apprentice in North Hollywood is a chance to refine your craft, take in inspiration from the Valley, and work toward becoming a professional tattoo artist.
