An Overview of the Two Paths: Tattoo Apprenticeship vs Communications Degree

A tattoo apprenticeship is a focused, hands-on training and mentorship, where you develop fundamental tattooing skills alongside experienced Tattoo Artists. You start by building a strong foundation in drawing and design fundamentals before progressing into tattoo techniques. Beyond tattooing, you also practice important professional skills such as client communication, time management, and developing habits that support a successful and sustainable tattoo career.

A Communications degree, on the other hand, aims to build strong communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. It covers how to create, deliver, and interpret messages across public speaking, public relations, journalism, marketing, advertising, and other areas.

That said, Communications is often seen as a broad and somewhat vague field of study. It spans everything from media and public relations to broadcasting and digital content, which means it can be a bit less specialized. For some, this breadth offers flexibility; for others, it might feel less focused, especially if they’re looking for specific, hands-on skills. While a Communications degree can open many doors, becoming an effective communicator doesn’t always require a four-year university commitment.
