Back to school 2026

This fall, learn something you actually want to do.

New notebooks, fresh schedules, and everyone around you asking the same question: so, what are you doing this fall? Back to school does not have to mean a classroom you do not love, or debt for a degree that does not get you closer to the life you want. This year, put something different on your radar: a Tattoo Apprenticeship.

Tell us about yourself and an admissions Advisor will call to walk you through how the apprenticeship works. No cost, no obligation.

We usually call within one business day.

The industry

Join the $2.2 billion tattoo economy

The tattoo industry is booming, and it offers real opportunities for people ready to turn creative talent into a profession.

$51,511Average first-year income of a Tattoo Artist in the USA
21,000+Tattoo studios in the USA, and growing
$106,868Average annual income of a Tattoo Artist in the USA, according to ZipRecruiter

The idea

Your next classroom could be a tattoo studio

Instead of lecture halls and textbooks, you learn in a real, working professional tattoo studio, side by side with an experienced Tattoo Artist who is doing the thing you want to do. Instead of theory, you build hands-on skills that translate directly into a career:

  • A real studio, not a lecture hall
  • Hands-on skills, not just theory
  • A Mentor beside you, from day one
  • A clear, purposeful path to a career

Three ways in, honestly compared

We are not anti-college. For some people it is the right call. But “degree or nothing” is worth questioning, and so is the short course that promises a shortcut.

What you actually learn

Four phases, 18 to 24 months

Not a syllabus you skim once. This is the order you learn it in, and nothing moves forward until the phase before it is solid.

Phase 01

Foundations

  • Bloodborne pathogens and sterilization
  • Station setup and cross-contamination control
  • Machine and needle theory
  • Skin anatomy, and how ink behaves in it
Phase 02

The craft

  • Linework and line confidence
  • Shading, black and gray
  • Color theory and pigments
  • Design, placement and stencil work
Phase 03

Live skin

  • Supervised procedures on real clients
  • Your Tattoo Mentor in the room for every one
  • Building a portfolio as you go
  • Working to studio hygiene standards
Phase 04

The business

  • Consultations, pricing and client care
  • Booking, deposits and no-shows
  • Portfolio and building a following
  • Studio operations and licensing prep

For context, some states set 360 hours as the minimum for a tattoo course. An Ink Different Apprenticeship runs 18 to 24 months.

The people doing the teaching

You will not be taught by a video course

Every apprentice trains under a working Tattoo Mentor with 10 to 20+ years in the industry, inside a licensed studio, on real clients. These are the people who will be in the room with you.

Before you apply

What we look for

We would rather be straight with you now than take your application and waste your time.

This is for you if

  • You are 18 or over
  • You draw, and you can show us something you made. It does not have to be good, it has to be yours
  • You can commit to 18 to 24 months
  • You can get to your chosen studio reliably
  • You want this as a career, not a hobby

It may not be for you yet if

  • You are looking for a two-week certificate
  • You want to learn entirely online, without ever working on skin
  • You cannot commit the time yet. That is fine, come back when you can
  • You have not drawn anything in years, and do not intend to start

We do not accept everyone who applies. Every apprentice takes up a Tattoo Mentor’s time, and there are only so many hours in a week. That is the honest reason.

You did not miss a deadline

We do not run on a semester calendar

College makes you wait for fall. Apprenticeships do not work that way, so your start date is a conversation rather than a date you already missed. Talk to an Advisor about the curriculum, the mentorship, and what is open at the studio nearest you.
